Your Guide to Proper Winter Storage

Writer: Detail TechDetail Tech

Tip 1 - Full Wash

Proper maintenance is an important step when storing your vehicle for the winter. It is best to remove dirt and contaminants from the paint before storing the vehicle.

This step is essential to do every year to avoid excessive build-up of contaminants in the paint. When left untreated, permanent damage will occur and create an expensive repair.

The process starts with a Full Hand Wash and Iron Decontamination. Once the vehicle is fully washed, we apply our Clay Bar treatment to remove contaminants from the vehicle's paint. See our Level 2 Exterior Package on our services page!

Tip 2 - Correct Coating Coverage for Storage

Did you know using the right cover or vehicle wrap might not be enough protection during our harsh Illinois winters?

Choosing the right cover that suits your vehicle during storage is extremely important. Before you cover your vehicle, we must first apply an adequate, protective layer between the paint and vehicle cover. This protective Coating will provide the best protection since there is a great risk of scratching the paint while wrapping or covering your most prized possession.

Our experts recommend either a Graphene Spray or a Ceramic Coating to help protect your vehicle.

Tip 3 - Clay Bar

Our Clay Bar Service removes contaminants that can be left behind after a basic car wash service. The Clay Bar and Clay Lube removes such particles as iron, dirt, mud, tar and sap that are known to embed themselves underneath the surface paint.

The stickiness of the clay will pick up those stubborn particles that a basic car wash cannot.

Tip 4 - Interior Detail

Storing your vehicle can be stressful. There is a long list of needs to prep your vehicle for the winter. An Interior Detail may not be on the top of your list.

However, imagine unwrapping your vehicle for the summer season and instead of a nice, clean interior, a family of mice moved in and had other ideas....

An Interior Detail establishes less vulnerability to unwanted guests. A level 2 Interior Detail with Detail Tech provides a carpet and seat extraction, full vacuum, steam cleaning of all interior surfaces and crevasses, odor removal, etc. See our Services Page for more details.

An Interior Detail will bring life and value back into your vehicle. More importantly, it will extinguish food odors, remove crumbs and wrappers you didn't know existed. All things pests love.

Tip 5 - Iron Decontamination

To remove stubborn iron spots embedded into the paint we recommend booking an Iron Decontamination Service. Iron is one of the most stubborn contaminants to remove. If left untreated iron turns into rust through a natural chemical reaction, oxidation. It's important to have an iron decontamination treatment once a year to ensure the elimination of iron buildup, ultimately preventing rust and ensuring healthy paint.

Our custom, industrial-grade iron remover is applied to the entire surface of the vehicle to break down the contaminated areas. We then follow that with the full clay bar service to ensure the removal of all iron contaminants from the paint. If desired, you can book this service under a level 2 Exterior, level 2 Interior & Exterior service, or any package above a level 2!

Tip 6 - Paint Correction

You may notice swirl marks after taking your car through the car wash this summer. Our Paint Correction Service removes these swirl marks and minor imperfections in the paint.

To ensure your vehicle looks brand new after the long winter season it is recommended your vehicle is booked for a Paint Correction.

Our process includes a hand wash and drying of the exterior, then applying our Clay Bar treatment, and finally beginning a three-step polishing process. First, we use a paint reader to measure the distance between the paint and the metal surface.

Next, we use a commercial grade cutting pad to reach the damaged paint and remove swirl marks. Measuring the paint is crucial to determine how far our team needs to cut into the surface.

Finally, we follow-up with a softer pad and do the whole car again to bring back its original factory shine!
